According to Reuters and AFP news, Panamanian President Cortiso said on the 20th that he had been diagnosed with a rare blood disease called myelodysplastic syndrome.
Myelodysplastic syndrome is considered a cancer that affects the body's ability to make healthy blood cells in the bone marrow, according to the American Cancer Society. In a statement, Cortiso said he was in "good shape" and would continue to carry out his day-to-day duties as president. He is due to undergo a second medical evaluation in Houston in July to understand the severity of the disease.
