What is Membrane Key?

If you want to know about membrane key, you must first learn about membrane switch. Membrane key is a small part in the graphic overlay of a membrane switch. It has inner structures beneath the graphic overlay, which could be metal dome. This is often the case. 

The membrane key can be tactile as well. In this case, we call it tactile membrane switch. It means that there's no metal dome and the surface of graphic overlay is flat.

Does a membrane switch always contain membrane keys?

The answer is yes. Because if there is no membrane keys, then the finished product wouldn't be called membrane switch. It may be called graphic overlay only. Membrane key provides the interface for human to input signals, which will be relayed through the upper & lower circuits, to eventually transmitted to the controller ICs. But a graphic overlay without membrane keys doesn't have this kind of function.
