Rubber Keyboard For Computer Keyboard

Silicone rubber keyboards are widely used in consumer electronics and industrial electronics as a low-cost and reliable switch solution. The technology utilizes the compression molding properties of silicone rubber, and when a switch is pressed, the webbing deforms uniformly to create a tactile response. When pressure is removed from the switch, the webbing returns to its neutral position with positive feedback.

To make an electronic switch, a carbon or gold pellet is placed on the base in the center of the switch, which makes contact with the printed circuit board when the web is deformed.

The rubber keyboard can be designed to have a positive tactile response when the operator presses the keyboard.

To get the good tactile feel inherent in a rubber keyboard, the keyboard should have at least 0.060" of travel and an actuation force between 50 and 170 grams.

As an alternative, a haptic layer can be added between the rubber keyboard and the circuit layer, which will allow for good haptics even with small keys and minimal travel distance.
