1:2.5 Million Lunar Geological Map Released

Jun 09, 2022

On June 9, the reporter learned from the official website of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that under the leadership of Ouyang Ziyuan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Liu Jianzhong, a researcher of the Institute of Geochemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Geochemistry, as the leading unit, cooperated with Jilin University, Shandong University, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, China University of Geosciences (Beijing), Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences and other units, based on the data of China's Chang'e Project, make full use of other international lunar exploration data and research results, and analyze the "strata", morphology, composition, Research on tectonic and geological age, put forward a new lunar geological chronology, established a division system of impact crater material, impact basin construction, rock type and tectonic type, and formulated the standard, process, method and schema for the preparation of lunar geological maps Legend, using GIS platform to complete the world's first 1:2.5 million full moon geological map of the moon.

Geological map of the moon

It is understood that on May 30, the results of the lunar geological map were published online in Science Bulletin.

The lunar geological map system expresses the comprehensive geological information of the lunar crust surface strata, structure, lithology and chronology, and reflects the evolutionary processes of lunar magmatism, impact events, and volcanic activities. The existing lunar geological maps are mainly compiled by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) based on the results of lunar exploration in the Apollo era. Since the 1990s, human exploration of the moon has achieved rich results, expanding the understanding of the moon, but the preparation of the lunar geological map has lagged behind. Around 2012, after the exploration and research accumulation of Chang'e-1 and Chang'e-2, my country gradually had the conditions and foundation to carry out the compilation and research of the lunar full-moon geological map.

According to reports, in the newly compiled lunar geological map, the lunar geological chronology has been updated based on the understanding of the lunar dynamic evolution process, and the lunar surface history is divided into three epochs-Pluto using the division scheme of "three epochs and six epochs". Lunar Epoch (Magmatic Ocean Period), Palaeolunar Epoch (Aiken Period, Wine Ocean Period and Imbrium Period) and Crescent Period (Eratronian Period and Copernican Period), and the internal dynamic geology during the evolution of the moon The action-dominant stage, the both internal and external dynamic geological action stage, and the external dynamic geological action-dominant stage correspond to each other.

The elements expressed in this geological map mainly include: 12,341 impact craters, of which 7,548 impact craters have identified and expressed crater materials, and 4,793 impact craters are represented by annular structures; 81 impact basins, with their basin constructions identified and expressed; 17 types Rock types, including 5 types of lunar basalts (extremely low-titanium, low-titanium, medium-titanium, high-titanium and very high-titanium basalts), 7 types of non-lunar basalts (ferrous anthrite, ferrous cyrdite, magnesia rock, magnesia, alkaline rock, KREEP rock, KREEP basalt) and 5 types of special rock outcrops (pure anorthosite, spinel anorthosite, olivine-rich rock, pyroclastic rock, siliceous volcanic rock) ); 14 types of structures, of which 10 types of internal dynamic structures include 16839 linear structures and 364 annular structures, and 4 types of external dynamic structures include 2137 linear structures and 4874 annular structures; the drawing also expresses some special Features, such as landing sites, special elevation points, etc.

It is reported that this 1:2.5 million full-moon geological map of the moon comprehensively expresses the information of lunar geology and evolution, which can provide important basic information for lunar scientific research, exploration planning, landing site selection, etc. for reference. The 1:2.5 million geological map of the whole month is compiled in both Chinese and English, and the paper version and electronic version are issued by the Geological Press at the same time. Also issued at the same time is a full-month tectonic outline map and rock type distribution map.
